Connecting
You to Alpharetta

What is the Alpha Loop?

The Alpha Loop is a network of urban, multi-use trails that links four of Alpharetta’s key activity centers – Avalon, Downtown, the North Point Eco District, and Northwinds – but it is also much more than that. The Alpha Loop is about having a sense of place, it’s about connection – connecting you to places, experiences, and to the people that are the heart of Alpharetta.

Whether you enjoy the Alpha Loop’s miles of 12-foot-wide paths on foot, bike, or one wheel; whether you pass through the woods and along its streams alone or with your best friend, on the Alpha Loop you will be connected to a community.

Rivers of Green

The idea for the Alpha Loop began when a group of Alpharetta’s elected officials and staff were visiting another community to learn how that community’s leaders had transformed their downtown. During a break between meetings, members of the Alpharetta delegation were strolling along the community’s river walk, a 12-foot-wide path that meandered along the river that ran through the district. Observing how much activity the river walk was generating, then Mayor David Belle Isle challenged the group to create one in Alpharetta.

Of course, Alpharetta lacks one important feature that every river walk needs . . . a river.

What Alpharetta lacks in water, however, it makes up for in bands of forested areas that lace the community, and the City’s planners quickly realized that those “rivers of green” connected many of our community’s neighborhoods and activity centers. With that observation, the vision for the Alpha Loop was born.

Less than 10 years later, that vision is becoming reality. The first 1.46 miles of the Alpha Loop are complete, and an additional .6 miles, including a tunnel under one of Alpharetta’s main arterial roads, are under construction.

Create Your Community

Cars are fine for getting from place to place, but experiences and connections are made when people are together in a community. By linking our neighborhoods, workplaces, entertainment, dining, and shopping, the Alpha Loop will give us the option to leave our cars behind and arrive at the lifestyle we really want.

When completed, the Alpha Loop will provide a 4-mile network of urban paths comprised of an inner and an outer ring. Those rings will link neighborhoods with more than 15,000 jobs and four of Alpharetta’s most energized activity centers: Avalon, Downtown, the North Point Eco District, and Northwinds. They also connect to the 26-mile Big Creek Greenway, providing access to neighboring communities, and to the region’s transit system, MARTA.

That’s the vision, and you can help make it a reality.
